Sleep makes you a better person. Your reactions times are faster, you are better at making decisions, you even find annoying things easier to laugh at. Think of the last time you had a fight with your partner because they didn’t take out the garbage, even though it was their turn and ask yourself, were you tired? It’s irrational, you know it’s irrational, but the lack of sleep makes it impossible to stop, and that full rubbish bin feels like the last straw scratching at a raw wound. We all know sleep makes us better people yet, being tired has become such a normal part of our lives we’ve begun to think that’s the way it’s meant to be.
Modern living is built around everything but sleep: the internet and mobile phones mean we are always contactable, 24hr news cycles make us think we should be always up-to-date, active lifestyles, social obligations, even artificial lights steal our sleep hours by keeping us alert. It can feel like everything in today’s world has been designed to keep us awake.
